New Years Resolutions Suck!

Ok, I know what you’re thinking “gee Fred how do you really feel about New Years resolutions”?

I love the idea of resolutions, but I hate the problems that they have:

·         They’re usually very vague “I want to lose weight”

·         There’s usually no deadline

·         They’re usually not written down

·         They’re usually forgotten in a month

·         They only happen once a year!

So instead of making resolutions that you aren’t going to keep, let alone remember, set some goals for the year! Make sure they’re specific, make sure there’s a time limit on them and make sure they’re state as if they’ve already happened.

“As of July 23, 2010 I have lost 20 lbs. of ugly fat and I look great!”

And make sure that you write them down so you won’t forget about them in a few days. Print them out and put them on your wall or mirror. That way you’ll see them every single day!

Then figure out what steps you need to take to achieve these goals. Find out what knowledge you need, what tools will help you and a reason why you MUST make this happen. Maybe there’s somebody you know that has a similar goal as yours? Make them your “goal buddy” and encourage each other so you can make this goal happen!

And now a step that a lot of people miss entirely, a step that seems obvious and stupid, but it is vitally important.

DO IT!

Follow through with your plan, make it happen and achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself! Don’t be one of those people next year who thinks about the resolutions they made last year… and didn’t do any of them!

You go now! Go do so much more!

Why focus on the negative?

I used to have a big problem whenever I was on stage. I'd look at the audience as I was giving my presentation and make eye contact with as many people as I could. That wasn't the problem, it's what every performer should be doing, the problem was every once in a while I'd spot somebody that looked like they weren't enjoying themselves.

For the rest of the presentation I'd be focused on that person, constantly looking back at them to see if they were having fun now! This one person would throw me off the whole time. I'd be thinking to myself "why aren't they laughing?" or "what's wrong with this guy?".

I was focusing on the one negative aspect of the performance (at least to me) and completely ignoring the fact that the other 500 people were having a great time! But to me, that one person that I couldn't "get to" was driving me crazy!

How many times in your life have you focused on the negative things and ignored all the good things around you? Sure when something bad happens, you have to deal with it. But once you've dealt with it...move on! You can linger in "why me" for a long time, but it won't do you any good!

So how did I solve this problem of mine? It came to me one performance several years ago. There was a guy sitting in my audience who just would not even look at the stage or me at any point in the show. He just sat there picking at his food (it was an after dinner presentation for a corporate client) and it looked like he could care less about anything I was saying or doing!

The whole time I'm thinking to myself 'why is he even here, he could've left after dinner, what a jerk!". But I finally got through the 45-minute performance and got a fantastic ovation from the crowd.

I go backstage and peak through the curtain at this guy as he's leaving. He stands up, picks up his white cane and his friend helps guide him out of the room. He was BLIND! No wonder he never looked at me, he couldn't see me!

That night I learned my lesson, I don't know what's going on in peoples minds while they're watching me or what their situation is. Maybe someones father just died and they don't really feel like laughing at my jokes right then. Or they've got problems at work on their mind, who knows!

I learned not to focus on the negative things that are out of my control. I learned not to worry and stress about the things I can't change and enjoy the things I can!

So the next time you find yourself thinking about some negative things in your life ask yourself "will worrying about this do me any good, will it help me solve this problem or will it just stress me out even more?".

Then move on with your life!

What I learned from sitting at a Traffic Light

I'm on tour for the next couple of weeks in San Salvador, El Salvador (I'm guessing it's their version of New York, NY) and noticed something I've seen before here in South America.

At just about every traffic light at a busy intersection their was almost always somebody there juggling!

I know I was thinking the same thing "what are they doing there?"

Whenever their was a red-light, they would go out onto the crosswalk and start juggling. I'm not talking about just your average 3-ball juggling either, I'm talking 5 or 6 balls at a time! Or sometimes it would be juggling clubs or Diabolos, the Chinese Yo-Yo.

And these guys were really, really good! They wouldn't juggle for long, after all the light was going to change! They'd do their bit and then walk down the lanes with their hat in hand and collect "donations".

    They were true "street performers"!

    I learned several things from them;

    1. The best way to get good at something is to do it over and over and over again! They were probably out there everyday for hours and hours at a time doing this. You can't help but get good by putting this much time in.

    2. Don't expect something for free. They could have just as well been out there with a sign "need money for food, please help" and hoping for donations, but they weren't. They were providing a service, entertainment, for their captive audience and making some money for their effort.

    3. Just because you're good at something doesn't mean you'll be successful at it.  These guys all had "mad skills"  with their juggling, but I'm sure they couldn't put on a great show to save their lives. It takes more than just skill to able to perform for an audience and make it entertaining. I mean who wants to watch a guy toss 6 balls in the air for 45 minutes!

I've seen some really funny and entertaining jugglers who's technical skills were just "ok".  And just the opposite, I've seen some great technical jugglers who were boring and put me to sleep!

But at least these guys on the street corners were out their doing something! They weren't begging for money, they weren't sitting at home moaning that they didn't have any money. They were out there taking some action and doing something about it!

What actions are you taking to get your goals in life? What skills do you want to get good at?

Why aren't you "out there" on the street-corner?

"A Guide For Getting What You Want Out Of Life"

Learning Learning Learning

Besides being a Speaker, I am also a Magician. That's where my roots are and where I got my start speaking to groups of people.

I still keep up with what's new and exciting in the world of magic (how Doug Henning of me). So last night I attended a lecture by LA based Magician Bruce Gold and he didn't teach 1 single magic trick!

Am I angry about that? Not at all, because what he did teach was vastly more important and informative! He talked about improving the quality of the magic we do and making it better.

Can you imagine if somebody were able to show you how to do your job better? What if you were able to work more efficiently and be more effective. Wouldn't that be of greater value you to you than to learn a new job skill?

That's why I am constantly learning. I'm always attending meetings, listening to teleseminars and reading about speaking, success principles and business.

Remember when you were in school and you'd think "I can't wait to graduate so I don't ever have to learn or study again!". Thankfully we all know that if you are not learning something everyday, then you must be dead!

With the constant flow of information on the 423 channels on TV and this wonderful thing called the Internet you can't help but learn something!

And if you think you didn't learn anything today...well you just read this article and learned something about learning!

Gotcha!
